GJIROKASTRA

This necklace represents a tribute to the city of Gjirokastra — a city that never bowed, to the stone that speaks, and to the streets that preserve the memory of tradition.
The work harmoniously intertwines artistic, symbolic, and material elements, transforming jewelry into a form of cultural narrative.

At the center of the composition lies a circular medallion, conceived as a miniature painting that opens like a small window in time. It depicts the characteristic landscape of Gjirokastra: stone houses rising one upon another, the fortress dominating the hilltop, and the Albanian flag, a symbol of resilience, identity, and historical continuity. This image encapsulates the city’s urban and historical spirit.

Beneath the painted scene, the cobblestone path is constructed tridimensionally using hand-placed labradorite stones. Set individually, these fragments form the stone road upon which generations have passed. The optical properties of labradorite — its ability to capture light and reflect it in subtle, hidden flashes — evoke the nature of Gjirokastra’s cobblestones: cold in appearance, yet imbued with stories, footsteps, and voices of the past.

The upper structure of the necklace is conceived as a crown of memory.
Coral branches in deep red hues symbolize life, blood, and continuity, while the small roses represent beauty emerging from stone and austerity. Crystals and pearls create a visual dialogue between light and shadow, delicacy and strength — a symbolic reflection of Gjirokastra’s own character.

The vertical form of the necklace guides the viewer’s gaze like a city street: from the neckline, where the narrative begins, downward toward the medallion, where history pauses and speaks. Each element is organically connected to the next, just as the city’s neighborhoods are linked by narrow cobblestone paths, forming a structure that transcends aesthetics and becomes an object of narrative and cultural value.
